General Veterinary Questions
-
Eating grass in dogs can be a symptom of nausea or stomach issues. However, in some dogs eating grass is a learned behavior and perfectly normal! If you have concerns about your dog eating grass or if this is a new behavior, CONTACT us today to consult with one of our veterinarians.
-
From kibble to canned, homemade diets to raw - there are a lot of diet options for our pets. A good diet is complete and balanced, not high in fat, and safe to consume with no risk of contamination. Certain medical conditions such as kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or bladder stones require more specific prescription diets to manage. CONTACT our office to discuss your pet’s diet with one of our veterinarians today.
-
We recommend annual visits, with more frequent visits for older pets or pets diagnosed with a chronic condition.
-
In Boerne, the risk of heartworms to dogs and cats is present all year. Even indoor pets should be on regular heartworm prevention.
-
Fleas and ticks present a risk not only to our pets, but also to human housemates. CONTACT us today to consult with one of our veterinarians about safe and affordable treatment options.
-
Dogs and cats generally should not be anesthetized before 6 months or age due to higher risks of anesthesia. Timing of spaying or neutering depends on a variety of risk factors such as pregnancy, certain cancers, or arthritis. We generally recommend scheduling your pet’s spay or neuter between 6 months to 1 year of age. CONTACT us today to consult with our veterinarians about your specific pet’s needs.
-
If you notice bad breath, red gums, or tartar on your pet’s teeth, we recommend scheduling a dental cleaning with us today. Dental disease not only causes our pet’s mouth pain and bad breath, but can also lead to more serious conditions like heart or kidney disease. During a visit with our veterinarians, we can discuss the risks of anesthesia as well as the benefits of a dental cleaning with your pet.
-
When your pet arrives for a dental cleaning, they are first examined by a veterinarian and any pre-anesthetic bloodwork is performed. If your pet is determined to be healthy enough for anesthesia, they are anesthetized using a combination of injectable and gas medications. They are closely monitored with advanced anesthetic monitoring during the procedure. The vet examines the patient’s mouth and teeth, and the teeth are scaled and polished. Any infected or loose teeth are noted and a consultation with the owner occurs before any extractions are performed. Your pet is closely monitored during recovery and goes home at the end of the day!
-
Abnormal behavior in your pet may be a sign that something more serious is underlying. Changes in appetite, energy level, mood, urinating/defecating habits, shaking, or any other changes in normal routine can be symptoms of pain or sickness. CONTACT us today to consult with our veterinarians.
-
Bloodwork in our pets can be a valuable tool to diagnose illness, as well as monitor health. Bloodwork evaluates any possible inflammation/infection, kidney or liver issues, blood sugar and electrolytes, proteins and many other specific markers of health in our pets. CONTACT us today to discuss bloodwork options for your dog or cat.
-
Scooting in pets can be a sign of discomfort or itchiness. When a dog’s anal glands become impacted, scooting can be a sign that the glands are full and need to be expressed. CONTACT us today to have your dog’s glands expressed to prevent future complications or infections.
-
